Jacqueville

An island joined to the mainland by a bridge, between the Ébrié lagoon and the ocean.

Coastline · 1 h 30 from Abidjan

Jacqueville is on a long island west of Abidjan, closed off by the Ébrié lagoon on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Until 2015 you reached it by ferry; a bridge now makes it an easy ninety minutes from the city, which has opened it up without yet crowding it.

The appeal is straightforward: coconut groves, a strip of sand that runs for kilometres, and Alladian fishing villages where the day is still organised around the nets. It works as a day trip, and it works better as an overnight — the beach empties completely once the Abidjan cars leave.

What to see

On the ground

The beach

Long, open and largely undeveloped. The ocean has current here too: ask locally before swimming.

The fishing villages

Alladian communities work this coast. Nets are hauled in collectively in the morning, and visitors who ask politely are usually welcome to watch.

The coconut groves

Plantations run most of the island's length, and the road through them is one of the more pleasant drives near Abidjan.
