Korhogo is the main city of the north and the centre of Senufo culture. The landscape changes completely on the way up: forest gives way to savanna, the air dries out, and the architecture shifts to mud and thatch. The rhythm changes too.
The region is known above all for its craftsmanship, organised village by village — one for weaving, one for carving, one for blacksmithing. The most famous is Fakaha, about forty kilometres away, where the Korhogo cloth is painted: cotton strips woven locally, then drawn on with fermented mud and plant dyes, in figures of animals, dancers and masks. What you buy at the workshop and what you find on a tourist stall are not the same object.

Around Korhogo, work is specialised by village: blacksmiths, carvers, weavers, potters. A day spent moving between them is worth more than any museum.

Initiation groves surround many villages. They are not visitor sites: some can be approached with permission, most cannot, and your guide will tell you which is which.
