Ehotilé Islands

A national park of lagoon islands: mangrove, water birds, and islets held sacred.

Nature · Near Assinie

The Ehotilé islands sit in the Aby lagoon near Assinie, and are protected as a national park. They are small — a handful of wooded islands and mangrove channels — and you reach them by pirogue, which is a large part of the pleasure.

The islands also hold a place in the history of the Ehotilé people, who consider several of them sacred and who buried their kings there. Some can be visited with a local guide, others are not open at all, and that distinction is respected without negotiation.
