A village built on stilts above the lagoon, reached only by pirogue.
Tiégba is a lake village on the Ébrié lagoon, west of Abidjan. Part of it stands on the shore, part on stilts over the water, joined by walkways. The community settled here generations ago, and the reason is the same today as it was then: the lagoon is the field, the road and the market all at once.
The visit is short — half a day, including the pirogue crossing — but it reframes things. You see how a village organises itself around water rather than land, and the fishing techniques, the house-building and the movement of children between them all follow from that.
Houses and walkways built out over the lagoon. People live here year-round; it is a community, not a site, so the usual courtesies apply.
